Wendy Hilliard Foundation “WHF”
Competitive Rhythmic Gymnastics Team Program
The Competitive Rhythmic Gymnastics Program of the Wendy Hilliard Foundation was formed in 1996 and known as, “Rhythmic Gymnastics NY (“RGNY”). In May 2000, RGNY competed at the Junior Olympic National Championships and won 1st, 2nd and 3rd place awards in the group division. In July 2000, Random House published a book that features RGNY team member, McKenzie Foster. The book is a photo essay that tells the story of a young girl’s love of gymnastics. In the summer of 2001, Team 2012 was formed consisting of girls aged 6-10 as a preparation team for the 2012 Olympics. Team members have competed in competitions ranging from local meets to national level competitions. Also in the summer of 2001, RGNY and Team2012 participated in the foundation’s first international student-exchange program with “Rhythmic South” an elite rhythmic club from Southampton, England. The team members hosted the rhythmic gymnasts from England during the final two weeks of the Free Summer Gymnastics program and then traveled to England for ten days. The goal of the WHF is to ensure that all the girls have the opportunity to be on the team if they show talent, potential and a good attitude – and not have money be a deterrent to their dreams. The WHF Team has been extremely successful at the national level. Alexis Page a WHF Scholarship Student is now on the National team and has been travelling the world competing for the US. Former WHF Team Member, Lyrica Okano, also made the USA national team in 2009The team consistently wins top honors at the Junior Olympics National Championships, including many first place finishes. The WHF is renowned for its outstanding performances. Former WHF Team member and current WHF Instructor, Ziporah Roney is professional performer and toured Brazil with Antigravity; an international aerial and gymnastics company. Team members also appeared as the half-time performance for the WNBA New York Liberty, and featured in “Black History Month” cable promotional spots by ESPN and CSTV and numerous other local and regional television broadcast. The WHF team also serves a very important service -- a special place for girls. Team members develop teamwork skills and concentration levels that will help with their schoolwork and social skills. They will gain experience traveling around the country and learn to perform at their best under pressure. Good health skills are also an important part of the Wendy Hilliard Foundation Competitive Rhythmic Gymnastics Team Program. The Women’s Hospital of Special Surgery – the leading women’s sports medicine practice in NYC, provides team members with medical advice and information regarding nutrition and female health concerns.
